Winemaking and Tasting Notes
Syrah is another vitis vinifera that had best adapted to our tropical soil and climate. The Syrah grapes for 2020 The Orient were hand selected from three oldest blocks of lower yielding vines on a slope with red clay and good drainage. The grapes were hand harvested in the cool nights of February at 24°Brix and hand-sorted resulting in concentrated fruit with full flavours and tannins.
The Syrah was vinified with an extended maceration period of one and a half months to achieve full
flavour and complexity. It was then aged in mostly new French oak barrels and 10% in American oak
barrels for seventeen months for well-structured tannins and integrated oak characters. The result is an elegant yet fruit-forward Syrah with nose of cassis, ripe plum and hints of green peppercorn and clove. On the palate, the wine is complex, and dry with generous middle-palate sweetness and held together by tight acid backbone. It is round and luscious with integrated vanilla oak and long lingering finish. The fine tannins make it pleasurable drinking on its own or with food.
2020 GranMonte The Orient Syrah is crafted to be enjoyed with a few years of cellaring and will improve with age. Drink now - 2035.
